We’re also going to talk a bit about Bride of Re-Animator, and then we’re going to ignore Beyond entirely.Ībbott, Combs, and Crampton, ‘Re-Animator’ (1985) ![]() An adaptation of the Lovecraftian novelette of the same name, Re-Animator and its two sequels ( Bride and Beyond) focus on the shenanigans of one Herbert West (Jeffrey Combs) and the carnage he leaves in his wake as he attempts to discover the ‘cure’ for death.įor the purposes of this piece, we’re going to be talking about the extended, 105 minute cut of Re-Animator, simply because it’s a more complete version of the story than the 86 minute theatrical cut. However, it did help to launch the careers of Jeffrey Combs and Barbara Crampton, as well as sending director Stuart Gordon from theatre into film and it’s also just one of the best sci-fi horror films ever made, and that counts for something. We simply don’t talk about it enough anymore, especially in conversations about heavy-hitter horror franchises. Though it certainly doesn’t get as much mainstream recognition as similar films like Evil Dead. Released in 1985, spawning numerous sequels, and becoming the most well-known adaptation of the source material, Re-Animator shouldn’t qualify as a “lesser known” horror film. ![]()
